Founded in 1971 as the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Hospital, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital is one of the largest rehabilitation facilities in the U.S., providing comprehensive rehabilitation treatment.
Spaulding's mission is to:
- Provide a full continuum of rehabilitation treatment and care.
- Contribute new knowledge and treatment approaches through research and outcome studies.
- Educate future rehabilitation specialists, including physicians, nurses, therapists and other allied health professionals.
- Advocate for persons with disabilities.
- Collaborate with Partners and other healthcare providers.
Spaulding's Stroke/Neurology Rehabilitation Program in the metro-Boston area provides comprehensive rehabilitation and medical management for individuals who have had a stroke or for those with neurodegenerative diseases. The program aims to provide the highest quality stroke rehabilitation care possible, to educate stroke survivors and the community about stroke rehabilitation, and to advocate for stroke survivors and their families.
Comprehensive services will be provided in the areas of:

Physical Therapy - to help the patient achieve maximum motor control strength, balance, and mobility. - Occupational Therapy - to help the patient complete everyday functional activities of daily living.
- Speech-language Pathology - to assess cognitive and communication functions and to improve language skills and swallowing.
- Psychiatry - to assist with mood disturbances and recommend medications if needed.
- Psychology - to assist with treatment of adjustment difficulties and other psychological issues that can develop during stroke rehabilitation.
- Neuropsychology - to provide evaluations and design innovative treatment recommendations for individuals with cognitive impairments.
- Nutrition - to design an appropriate diet, based on the individual's capabilities for swallowing.
