National Parkinson Foundation Support Group
An NPF support group provides a place for people whose lives are affected by Parkinson's disease to come together to seek information and share their experiences.

A support group is a gathering of people whose lives are affected by Parkinson's disease who come together to seek information, voice their concerns and mutually share their experiences. The meetings provide an opportunity to discuss experiences and feelings and to share information and solutions to common problems.
For some people, the most difficult step is walking through the door, but most find that once they make the decision they find it to be helpful and supportive. A support group is not a substitute for medical treatment or professional counseling and it is not a replacement for family and friends.
People receive support from different types of groups, such as:
- Educational/informational groups that often have guest speakers Discussion groups where participants share their concerns, questions and receive support Exercise / relaxation groups for the person with Parkinson's and/or their caregiver. Some are general exercise groups while others offer specific modalities like tai-chi, yoga, meditation, etc.

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s, affecting about one million people in the United States and an estimated four million worldwide. The prevalence of the disease is expected to increase substantially in the next 20 years due to the aging of the population in the U.S., Europe and globally, as well as an increase in the age-related incidence of the disease. The economic burden of Parkinson’s disease is estimated to be $6 billion annually in the U.S.
Since its inception more than 50 years ago, the National Parkinson Foundation has worked to address the unmet needs in Parkinson's care and treatment. In 2011 and beyond, NPF works every day to improve the quality of Parkinson's care through research, education and outreach. We believe by working together, we can improve the quality of care for every person diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
