Kirkwood by the River

About Us

Located on 120 beautiful wooded acres in the foothills of the Appalachians, Kirkwood by the River is a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community near Birmingham, Alabama. Incorporated as Presbyterian Homes of Birmingham, Inc. and sponsored by Independent Presbyterian Church, it is open to all people regardless of church affiliation.

Our full continuum of care includes 72 Independent Living apartments, 24 Assisted Living units, 20 Specialty Care Assisted Living units on Kirkwood Lane and a 60 bed Skilled Nursing facility offering private pay and Medicare rehab.  New residents can enter at anyone of these four levels of care.

Although we enjoy our quiet and scenic campus, we are just minutes away from medical facilities, shopping centers and cultural and social events.

Independent Living

One, two and three bedroom units are available. Admission is on a membership basis. Two 100% refundable plans are offered.

Each apartment has large rooms, ample closet space, and a balcony or patio. Carpet and draperies are provided by Kirkwood. The all electric kitchens provide the ideal spot to cook as much or as little as one chooses. Kirkwood's many services and amenities give one the opportunity to enjoy an independent carefree lifestyle.

Assisted Living

Kirkwood has twenty-four private assisted living units, each with its own balcony. Residents bring their own furniture creating a familiar home-like atmosphere. A convenient dining room is located on each hall, as is a pleasant sitting room.

Assisted living residents are as independent as possible, enjoying many and varied activities provided on a daily basis. Assistance is available for bathing, medications and dressing. Staff members are on duty 24 hours daily.

Specialty Care

Kirkwood Lane specialty care assisted living, with eighteen private units, is designed to provide the care and services for individuals who need more monitoring and assistance with their activities of daily living due to mild or moderate memory loss.  Kirkwood Lane offers a secure homelike environment with 24-hour personal care assistance from our specially trained staff.  This specialty program enables individuals with mild to moderate memory loss to live an active dignified life.
